Sorry. Original comment looked harsh in retrospect. Assume you have no insurance policy covering the pet at all, or anything in home insurance that may cover it(clutching at straws).

Is there no way you can get someone to take you into the RSPCA at Cambridge/Wimblington?

yes i am aware of that but before i take the pet to the vets i thought i would ask..seems like there is help out there for most things and i always find out after the event.. didnt plan to be on benefits when we had the pet but things happen that we have no control over like the pet getting ill

    Hiya jockettuk,

is there by any chance a PDSA around ur area, i know they offered free treatment not sure if they charge a nominal fee now or ask for a contribution it may have changed i havent needed to use them for some time now, but worth checking. If not try asking the staff not the vet if they can recommend anything for you if no joy there ring a round other vets for advice i'm sure there will be someone able to give you some advice.

if its a cat you have you could always try the cats protection league they may be able to assist.

    HTH & Good luck

Yes, our vet will spread the payments if I ask. If it's going to be really expensive they usually offer it.
  • The PDSA will only give you free treatment if you are in receipt of housing benefit. They will want to see an award letter from your local council and that will give you 12 months 'cover' to have your pet treated at a PDSA hospital.

They will give you a small envelope when you arrive and it's up to you how much you donate. Theres no one looking over your shoulder or anything like that.

no pdsa here so that wasnt a option but .. our vet used to let people pay over a period of time but noticed a new notice on her wall saying there is no credit ... she must have been fleeced a few times for her to do this.. .. thanks for all your help on this matter..

  • Jockettuk, there may not be a PSDA hospital near you but in Ely there is a PDSA practice, which is a private vets that also works with the PDSA and will provide the same service as a PDSA hospital. I know its probably about 30 miles away but the money you would save on vets bills will still outweigh the travelling costs. have a look here for more info:

  • Thanks Poppy for the link. This has always worried me now that we're retired and on Council Tax benefit. The thought of anything happening to our 6 year old Yorkie-cross and not being able to pay the vet fees is unthinkable. There is a PDSA vet centre in our very own town. Thank you
