Hi everyone,
Me and my partner moved into our apartment just over three years ago. The mattress although brand new was always very poor quality however it is now very worn out and you can feel the springs right through. In fact on one side the mattress just dips down all the way along the bed. Flipping it makes no difference and we're regularly waking up with back and neck ache.
Whos responsiblilty is it to purchase a new mattress? I feel bad asking since a mattress should not need replacing after only three years however it's pretty clear that they bought the cheapest mattress they could find meaning that it was inevitable this would happen before long...

I couldn't sleep on someone else's matterss long term! I would of brought one I wanted and put there one in storage somewhere and swapped them over when moved on!Aspiring to be financially independent.... from my parents!0

You probably would be better off buying your own mattress to suit your own comfort and health.FREEDOM IS NOT FREE0

I think I would try to get the landlord to replace it. If s/he refuses, I'd put that one in storage and buy a new one. When moving on, I would simply put the old one back and take the one I'd bought with me.0

I assume you are a tenant? If you own the property, clearly it is your responsibility!
How is your relationship with your landlord? Friendly? Do you see him regularly/occssionally? Does he do inspections?
If so, have a friendly chat, explain the problem, and ask if he'd replace the mattress. Inspections are actually mis-named - they are just as much an opportunity for tenants to bring up problems with the LL as the other way round!
If you never see him/never have inspections, you'll have to do the same thing in a polite, friendly letter.
Either way - he'll either agree..... or not! If not, my advice would be as Starbrite. Store the mattress and buy your own.0 -
Let's be honest. Even if the LL agrees to replace it he's not going to fork out for "one of the quality I want. Not even close." !I can't afford one of the quality I want. Not even close. The alternative was to buy a mattress topper but I'm afraid this won't accomodate for the huge dip...0 -

That's unfortunate and I can appreciate that quality mattresses are expensive, but there is no guarantee that a LL will not buy a cheap one with minimum number of springs or one that is too soft or too hard. Your back could be at risk if you don't have one that suits you. It's something that you may spend 7 to 9 hrs. per night on.FREEDOM IS NOT FREE0 -
The LL has no obligation to provide a new mattress. Your only option is either to ask the LL (he may well oblige if you are reliable, long-term tenants) or to store the existing mattress and buy a new one.Whos responsiblilty is it to purchase a new mattress?
You may be able to find a good quality second-hand mattress on ebay or Freecycle.0
