Ask them for proof of when they sent you confirmation.

How did you cancel the room? Telephone? Email? Or did you just not go back through the booking system?

I would be call up your bank as well and explain what's happened and the fact that you did not authorise the hotel to take the money.

    gosh what an awful letter..

Either write to the General Manager of the hotel or the Head Office if it is a chain, to get it resolved. I would say they will refund you , if you write a calm factual email regarding the situation when you initially booked. Ring the hotel and ask for GM name and write to him personally. Or if you cannot find it, pm me. (I am local, and in the trade)

A case of slander sounds like it's on the horizon. Call the bank and state that this is theft.

The issue is the lack of cancellation, this is better dealt with by a calm letter, not by accusing the hotel of theft. It isnt theft, it is an administrative error

Not excusing the poor response of course¬

And be sure to leave a factual "review" of the said Hotel on Trip Advisor! shocking reply letter!! this would be sure to put me off staying there if the review was worded convincingly enough without tones of anger or revenge in it....

I would copy and paste their letter to you onto trip advisor for all future guests to see, that might persuade them to reconsider the charge.

Do the tripadvisor after you hear from the GM though. You are not dealing with rational people here..!
