Has my gmail account been comprimised?

Options
I am this morning having problems signing into my gmail account.

I've had it years and my other accounts are ok.

I noticed on my mobile (android) when it said there was a problem accessing my account, although i read my overnight email earier today.

When i tried to authenicate my account it said wrong password, although it was definately right (checked caps locked was off as well)

Tried computer then but after a couple of tries it said account locked until tomorrow due to too many wrong attempt.

What i'm worried about is when i click on the cant access my account button when i try to answer my question about favourite football team it says wrong answer and also the email account that linked to sending new password. which is partly blanked out does not resemble any email account ive ever had.

I really need access to this account, has anybody got any ideas?

I think since the reset email address and security question has been changed (or arn't working) you will need to fill out a compromised account form which starts here.

also if you can think how it could have been compromised, did you enter the password on a webpage you thought was google, do you use the same password anywhere else on the internet? - if so change all the password now before it is too late, and if possible change them on a known clean computer, (your phone is a good choice for this as there is a very low chance that is the compromised device, if you don;t have a 2nd computer to use)

also is it possible that any other of your email accounts could have been compromised, if you suspect so I would srongly suggest you to change their password and also set up 2 step verification (as this will mean even someone who has your email and password cannot access your account without the special code from this app (because you have android))

more information about 2 step verification here

also for precaution you can run a malwarebytes scan on your computer to check you have not picked up any nasties on the internet

Just found out its definitely been hacked and so has my PayPal account which is linked.
Stupid me used same password, lesson learned, luckily found out earlier enough to stop them.
Is my gmail account gone for good? Use it for work, could really do with some info of it.

no you can fill out the compromised google account form I linked to in my post above, that way google can get the account back to you.

do you have a suspicion how it could have been hacked? I would run a virus scan to be on the safe side.

and I would very strongly suggest you set up 2 step verification on your other gmail accounts (if you have any other gmail accounts)

also you will want to chage anything that has it's password reset email address as the hacked gmail account (eg other email accounts).
