Tip: flexible student job

Hello, just thought I'd mention this briefly as I know when I start uni in september this will become a big hand to me.

The NHS is a brilliant employment opportunity. I currently work as a domestic, you clean up stuff and althoguh it isn't glamorous you learn alot about tolerance and who to trust and such.

You can easily apply to be a domestic near your home as 'bank' staff. THis means you work when you are able to and when they need you - they always need you. You get £6 (NHS minimum wage is about this) an hour and I currently get time and half saturday and double time Sundays.

Now the FANTASTIC bit is that when going to uni you can be transferred to work both at your home hospital and near your uni too. This actually only counts as one job (a uni going domestic tells me) so the tax stays lower if you ever have to pay it.

The transfer does rquire an additional interview but is so easy as you already have all the skills.

Please don't dismiss this, it's a fantastic way to pay for uni and you can earn around £1000 a month easily during the holidays.

  • I'm guessing you need a strong stomach for this one? It's great pay though.

I wouldn't necessarily say you need a strong stomach. The mental hospitals are the worst cause in the male rehab wards they defecate and urinate all over the floor and draw swastikas on the wall and such. But non-mental hospitals are probably much nicer.

I would do this job if it was only floors/equipment and what-not that needed cleaning. I don't think I could do sick or other bodily fliuds... I salute anyone who can do it - they deserve the money more than I do.

I think the PC term is "psychiatric" hospital, :o but you're bang on. Working as a domestic isn't glam at all but the money is good and flexible hours are the major plus point especially for students. :j

I think you need a strong stomach to clean up that sort of stuff :)

The nurses clean up sick and bodily fluids cause god knows I wouldn't do it. You don't have to do crap on the floor either ( but you do report it to a nurse for immediate cleaning). Crap in toilets and !!!! on the floor is all.

Crap is crap, regardless of its location :p No no nooo. I promised never to come into contact with crap again once my sisters were out of nappies! Even if I am paid for it.

Awww, I understand. I have never changed a nappy but have been in the presence of one and hated the stench, blech! Unless it's my kid I'm not changing it.

  • I've looked on the NHS website but it doesn't say they have any jobs, do you think i should ring up? do you enjoy the job? thanks xx
  • Hey. It's worth calling around local hospitals and asking if they have any places open for domestic assistants, they will maybe refer you to an application phone number or ask to see you. Be warned the application process may take some tim, the NHs waiting times are long(hahaha, I crack myself up).

I do enjoy the job actually, the toilets are just a matter of course and I don't care less about it. I get to chat to the patients who are often normal people but have done something wrong mentally or have went a bit odd from drugs. I amazingly got offered a second job within the hospital I work in to be the emergency co-ordinator at night. I sit in a room with all the alarm monitors and the recpetion stuff and rarely have to do anything.

Let me know if you get an application or anything. What area do you live in:? It may be adverstised as ancillary worker or general services assisstant too.
