Waterloo to Amsterdam by Eurostar/Train

My boyfriend is coming over from Canada in April and we want to have a night in Amsterdam. I wanted to fly from Gatwick but he really fancies going by train so that he can tick off places along the way!

I've been looking about and it's quite hard to find websites that offer packages especially as it involves a change of train. Any suggestions of where to look?

Thanks!

  • It's a long way by train and you will waste many hours which you could be enjoying Amsterdam IMO.
  • i flew last year took 55 mins and i have also driven which took 6 hours in total train would be longer than that i bet after all the faffing about so if you are not gonna fly go by car its an easy peasy journey other than the time of course :D

    Thanks for the replies.

I know that it's takes forever by train but he said that he's fine with that as we have loads to catch up on. We don't want to drive because we'll also be doing a big road trip of England, Wales and Scotland while he's here and that's plenty of driving for me!

So, any suggestions for websites to book a package by train? I'd be very grateful if anyone knows.

  • I have no idea who might do a package deal to Amsterdam by tain except for Cresta Holidays who took over Amsteradm Travel Service a while back.

If you don't mind doing your own package, you could start with a very useful website for any train service anywhere in the world : http://www.seat61.com/Netherlands.htm.

If you go to the Eurostar and Thalys websites, you might find it cheaper to buy separate Eurostar and Thalys tickets than trying to purchase a combined ticket. Thalys do particularly cheap deals for the Brussels to Amsterdam section eg €33 return on a SMILYS ticket.

  • I travelled from Waterloo to Amsterdam and back by train last September. Stop over in Brussels. That's great. Break in the middle, eat some nice Gauffres and hop on the train again. I bought Eurostar ticket online in advance and Brussels - Amsterdam return once I was in Brussels. Cost something like roughly £95.00 for two persons. Not too bad. If you want it cheaper, you can take the slower train from Brussels. That's then about half the price. If I remember right you'll have to change trainstation tough.
I'm sorry, can't remember the details anymore.
But the trains in Europe don't have this mad price policy that it is much more expensive to buy a ticket on the day of travel. It always costs the same apart from when you take a special offer (like weekend ticket or so).
    Have a good time!
