...I would like to buy one as a present but I have no idea how to know what is a good one or not, he wants it for mostly beach I think. Also how will I know if they are charging me a fair price? Any help appreciated.

Argos or somewhere like that would be your best bet I think ! prices varie from a cheap one probably around £20.00 up to a few hundred pound, I would say if you got one at 50-60 pound it will do the job well !

Beaches...most machines will work on dry sand but very few on wet sand. See

Ive been detecting (keep it under ya hats) for about 20 years and began with a cheap (£200) C-scope.

Its a lot like fishing in that you wait for hours and hours and suddenly get a bite .

For £300 you will get a very basic machine which will like others have said work fine on dry sand .You will find mostly modern coins ,coke can ring pulls etc but if you want a better chance of finding jewellry then you need to gt on the wet sand and for this you really need a PI (pulse induction ) machine, problem is this is not good on dry sand so my advice is to contact a company called Joan Allen down in Biggin Hill Sussex. They are very knowledgable and helpful.

Just to add ,I now have a £800 Minelab Quattro multi fequency detector but I still found some good stuff with a cheap machine but cheap machines can be very frustrating to use..........

Detectors work via high and low frequencies with most detectors working on 1 -2 frequencies the higher spec machines like the Minelabs work on 28 different frequencies but no point buying these unless you get the bug..

http://www.joanallen.co.uk/ They are good at throwing in extras like digging tools, finds bags, trowels and books..They also have a selection of used machines so its worth considering a used machine..
