The title says it all really!
We can't find car insurance under £4,000 for our 18yr old son who has just passed his test.
We have tried inputting details of numerous old/newish small engine hatchbacks. My husband with 25yrs of having insurace is a named driver and we have even looked at getting a smartbox fitted.
DS is a uni student living at home with a part time job at burgerking on minimum wage.
Can anyone help with ideas?

look outside the box. All young drivers will go for a small engined hatchback which means that 95% of young driver accidents have happened in a small engined hatchback.
look at something that everybody his age isn't driving rather than a statistic.0 -
We have just looked at lots of other cars... Estates, landrovers saloons, prestige cars.
No luck

Classic morris minors are coming out at £2500.

Thanks jayzy1,
We have tried elephant. I have lost track of which company has quoted what but they weren't particularly cheap for us.0 -
Aviva do a policy that is a bit different from other lenders (well unless other lenders are also doing the same now), whereby the policy can be in you/your husband's name and you son can be a named driver, its specifically aimed at young drivers and the terms are different to a lot of policies so that it is not fronting.
I'm not totally sure of all the details but I know someone who is using this for their son and its also mentioned off topic on this thread - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3314636
You may have already tried them but if not then worth a lookA smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Reliant Robin is sort of classed as a motorbike I think.0

He could use public transport instead?
He could ride a bike?
A scooter? A motorbike? Both very cheap to buy and insure.
Very rarely is it necessary for any 18 year old to be driving a car.0 -
Overriding factor is going to be postcode. Regardless of vehicle, if insurer sees postcode as high risk there is going to be a minimum charge that they will want for that aspect alone.
£2500 is quite cheap for an 18 yr old male driver who has just passed his test. Read through all of the other threads on here and you will see that insurers charge a lot as statistically these drivers have the most accidents.
Suggest you contact a broker as they will have access to insurers that do not use the aggregator sites. Also suggest you try NFU, Co-op and Aviva as they can sometimes be competitive.
At the end of the day though, you and your son may have to decide if a car is a nice to have or an essential. No point at all in working all the hours he can just to fund a car. Might be better looking at alternatives.0
