dispute with double glazing firm

Hi I have had new double glazing installed, was pleased until from outside the glass is BROWN tinted and makes house look dirty, i am in dispute with the company as nowhere in the paper work or from the salesman was there any mention of brown tinted glass. They have offered another set of windows but would be the same or even darker than i have already got. has anyone else had this problem and what do you think my chances are of getting refund or a set of clear glass windows. They are on finance.

  • call another window firm out to check the windows and get a quote to get it fixed. if someone else can get it fixed then the person who fitted yours can fix yours however it will cost them money.

You wanted windows so you get windows with not tints.

Not much help, but I asked my neighbours if their huge sliding doors were tinted and was told no they are on both sides of their kitchen so you can see straight through. They look tinted to me.

I have had new double glazing, but i wasnt told that it would be tinted brown, the window firm say there is nothing they can do. This has been going on for 3 months and i am fed up with all the letter writing and trading standards say that i should consider taking them to court now. Has anyone had this problem and what are my chances of a good outcome

The brown tint is the coating on glass which controls the sun light.

Some glass (low iron) is crystal clear like jewellry glass, whilst others are really dark for solar control

What you need is an independent person. This is a case where another party needs to help with the dispute. Is the company a member of the GGF, they have an arbitrator (FOC) that will say if the installing company is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Also DGCOS is your company a member because they are meant to arbitrate through their ombudsman for their members. There is a new ombudsman for the double glazing industry TGO The glazing Ombudsman where consumers can get redress if they are unhappy (but this has litterally just been formed so wont be able to help in your case)

The best companies use clear glass and still get energy rated windows

Buying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run.
