Estate Agents and money laundering regs

Estate Agents are increasingly concerning themselves with the money laundering regulations when there is no need. They now see it as their responsibility when they agree to market your property to go through the whole gamut of demanding to see proof of your identity (passport, driving licence etc) and recent utility bills.
What utter squit !
You would think that all those large amounts of money concerning house sales are going through their hands, when in fact they do not get to touch any of it.
All solicitors now have to ask for this information, even if you have been using the same one for years, and I think most people would agree that the legislation should be in place to prevent money laundering. It is to the solicitor/conveyancer that the money will be going and estate agents usually get their fees from them.
The more cynical amongst us might be thinking that estate agents are either nosy or are trying to make themselves look more professional.
Answers on a postcard please !

as money laundering regs make people involved solely responsible for their actions and any subsequent fines etc. I guess they are just proving a small point in attempting to show they did what they could do to try and confirm if the person had dishonourable intentions, adds no value true, but covering your back as an individual I wouldn't argue with0
