The easiest will be a 1 day Off Peak travelcard zone 1-2 £6.60, which you can buy from the Underground station or from any National rail station, this will give you unlimited travel for the day on the tube, bus and a discount on the river boats.

If your planning to go back to London in the future an Oyster card will workout cheaper and more convenient.

It really depends what area you will be staying in and what you want to actually do while you are here.

Sometimes you can walk quite easily from hotels to attractions and you may well be able to save yourself money by just taking the odd bus. In 24 hours im guessing youll be sleeping/ in hotel for some of it, so there is not loads of time so dont overspend on transport getting around and not enjoying yourself while you are here.

Also be aware that many tube lines have engineering works on the weekend and some weekends they are best avoided altogether if you are going to the wrong place at the wrong time.

TFL.GOV.UK has all the maps of transport and googlemaps is also very useful to locate hotel, attraction etc.

If you let us know where you are staying and hope to do im sure we can help.

If you get an Oyster card it will check the number of journeys you make so you wont pay more than a 1 day travel card costs.

If you have a hop on hop off bus tour, is it the one with the three separate routes? If so you wont need to spend anymore than this on transport. the bus tours in themselves are very time consuming ( I have only managed 2 of the 3 loops)

You are a 5 min bus ride or a 15 min walk from Oxford St marble arch etc.

I just got back last night from 'doing London' with my youngest DD (10yrs old)
Worth noting, children under 11 travel free with a ticket holding adult, you have to use the 'Baggage' turnstiles on the tube (She loved that idea!)
We had a one day travel card each day, £6.60 and it worked fine, between jumping on tubes, busses and a bit of foot work we managed to do London Eye, London Aquarium, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London and Greenwich Obsorbatory.
    Easy as it could be.

http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/ might be of interest - either your train tickets (don't let them get collected) or a travelcard purchased at Paddington mainline (not tube) would cover you for these.
