Internet/Skype Phones - Any Recommendations?

Went out in the sales today to have a look at a couple of these as I was hoping that they would be reduced somewhere. Unfortunately they still seem to be the same prices as before.

Cheapest ones I can find are either on ebay, or in Tescos (£15 with £5 free credit). I will only be calling my mate in Australia, so dont want to spend too much. Has anyone got a recommendation on which Internet Phone to go for please? I imagine most of these will be a bit cack so need some help sorting the wheat from the chaff.

  • If you are going to use skype dont buy the tesco one! Its a different system. For skype get the dabs value USB phone.

Not too worried whether it's skype or another VOIP service, as wont be used much. Though having just looked at the rates it looks to be 1.4p per minute on skypeOut and 4ppm on Tesco (I gather these are the only charges?!), so I guess Skype would be better in the long run..

Phone looks quite good. Top of the list so far. :)

dont pay to call  its free :T if your mate has a computer and bb

    see martins article here

on the subject of the actual phone i use a logitech premium usb headset 350. more expensive than the cheapo phones but the sound quality is far superior. i tested about 8 usb/bluetooth phones and headsets when kitting out the voip phone system at the office.

you could also use any standard analogue phone if you get a router with voip or an adapter to plug in the router like one of these.
You can then use a dect phone and wander round the house.

I just tried out my Aldi one today, and it seems fine. Instant connection to my sons mobile in Orlando. Cost was about 33p for 5 minutes or so, but I don't know how this compares. Anyway, phone cost £9.95, and included a £5 voucher. Plugged into a spare usb slot, and all very easy to set up. There were a few left in West Drayton branch, but obviously I don't know about others. Sound through the phone could be a bit better, but all recipients so far have said that clarity at their end was great.
