RSJ - 5m span

I appreciate the need for and will of course get a SE to do the calcs etc. But we are just trying to draw up some rough plans of what we are intending to do. The total width we will need to span is 5m. Does anybody know if typically that can be done with 1 RSJ across the width, or if it would normally require 2 RSJ's with some kind of support pillar in the span as well?

We are just trying to plan a rough layout of an opened up space and wondering if we should be including a pillar or not.

Many Thanks for any comments.

I have a 6m span supported by a single large RSJ. Of course, the SE did the calcs but there don't seem to have been any issues.

    What would it support?
  • Thanks for the replies so far. It would be the external wall, so will be supporting the rest of the external wall above and I would assume the roof weight is distributed through the wall too.

My RSJ supports the first floor of the house and, therefore, the roof above it. I have no support pillar anywhere along the span.

I honestly don't think you'll need 2 RSJs. Whether you can conceal one large RSJ in your ceilings if you need/want to, is another matter.

Thanks for this, good to know it is probably an option. We will make some plans on the assumption it is possible and then see what the SE says.

    Thanks again.

    Bi-fold doors underneath?

Cheers for the idea. Had to google what they are!

Not under the RSJ as we want the extension and room being extended to be one large open space. But might be a good idea for what will be the new external wall.....

The 2 RSJ's are normally required for an exteria wall because there are two skins to support assuming you have a cavity wall.

I have a 5m opening supported by two RSJ's which are bolted together.

An SE will draw up exactly what is needed and anything else is guess work, but 5m itself can be achieved without a support in the middle of it.
