Shattered driverside glass - advice, please re claiming

My car was broken into today. I guess they were looking for the tom-tom as the stand was there. They took nothing but left me with the inconvenience of phoning / driving around looking for a replacement before making my 60-mile journey home. GEM wouldnt help me because they said it wasnt a breakdown. The windscreen services they recommended either didnt have the glass in stock or couldn't come out till tomorrow which was no good to me.
I eventually found a windscreen company who fixed it and charged me £170k. They said I can claim through my insurance. I'm concerned they will put my premiums up if they find out about the break-in. Will they honour my claim without asking how the glass broke? Do I have to report the break-in to the police before they honour the claim?

The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.

If you use your insurers recommended glass repairer then there is generally no limit on what you can claim for, for others they will generally limit it (£125 for a lot) - which insurer is it?
You will generally have to pay an xs (typically 50-75)
Your premiums wont generally go up for a glass claim ( as you wouldnt lose any NCD)and nor would you need to notify the police
The above is if you have com insurance, with TPFT you would need to mae a full claim and lose NCD0 -
THanks for that. My insurer is Privilege. I would have gone with their recommended glass repairer (RAC or Autoglass) but when I phoned those two, none of them could help me. One of them said they'd come out the following morning and the other said they don't have the glass in stock for my make/model of car. I hope that given this they will not limit my claimThe reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.0

Yes I have fully comprehensive cover.
When renewing my insurance at the end of the year don't they ask about break-ins as one of their many questions? I don't recall but if they do and I say yes then I'm likely to be given a bigher quote aren't I?The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.0 -
No. if you renew they wont as you anything.
If you go somewhere new they will ask if you have had any claims in the last three years. If you tell them you just had a windsceen claim it isnt classed as a claim that affects your NCD.
If you explain that neither could provide the glass (they may say you should have agreed for them to secure your car, either with pespex or locing it up) but im sure if you explain they wil give you the full cover.
You will be fine with Priv insurance - give them a call and they will as for your receipt and you will be reimbursed less your xs. I think with Priv its a £75 xs?
I think on your insurance cert it explains a windscreen claim doesnt affect your NCD?0 -
I will give it a try. i'll let them know that I think securing it would have been insufficient as I had a 65-mile motorway journey ahead and those flimsy covers would have been inadequate.
Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.0 -

Don't think they will pay anything near this
Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
They should providing they are happy with the OP comments that their approved suppliers couldnt replace0

I would leave it, and forget the incident as a nightmare, cos firstly it is your responsibility to inform your insurance company of any breakins(but they are not going to know about it if you have not reported it to police or to them).
If you do decide to tell them, then you NCD will be protected, but your renewal premium is always going to go up.
so it is a matter of balancing and asking yourself whether you are ok with a claim on record and a rise n premium or bear the cost now and leave your record with the insurance company a blank sheet.
I would probably just get online and compare quote with and without the claim, and see what the difference is probably going to be.0 -
Oops. THaned in error!!
Ignore the above advice.
As previously mentioned a windscreen claim has no afect whatsoever on your NCD and therefore no affect on your insurance premium.0 -
