same here if your not a qualified mechanic you wont touch my vehicles and if word got around that you are not qualified then you wont get customers so end of business

What a load of rubbish. A piece of paper means jack i'm afraid, go to your local independent whos been working on cars for the last 30 years plus and ask to see their qualifications, I suspect the older guys who can do the job quicker and better than the younger guys have nothing formal.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

...£50 for parts for a clio service kit. dont know who your supplier is but you need to find some one else. I can get the parts for a max £40 next day delivery...
I don't need to find any supplier as I'm not thinking of embarking on a car servicing business that looks doomed before it's even started.

As I said, £41.66 as an estimate so I was not far wrong.

If you want to go into business, you need to get a handle on the financials
You'll end up getting less than a tenner for 1.5 - 2 hours work (yourtime estimate), so less than NMW. (this is before you've paid any other expenses/fixed costs) I'd suggest you get your mate to give you a job - it'll be financially more worthwhile ;)

  • sorry to resurrect an old thread but I thought i would give some feed back.

    so

I have been self employed part time for 3 months now working through a friends garage.

I have my own insurance ect and go to customers houses / places of work ect.

also as ive been visiting other local garage owners and getting work through them.
as with the weather it has been a bit damp but 1 of the local garages that I work for has a out building/workshop that dosn't get used any more (not high enough for a ramp) that i can use at a highly discounted rate.

my partners best friend is a accountant so she is doing my books at the moment for me for free.

parts that i need to order i get through the garage.

as for the qualifications im enrolled at a local collage as an apprentice. I go in for 1 afternoon a week rather than a whole day because I have the experience and the assessor / tutor comes out once a month to see the work im doing.
so hopefully i should have a City of guilds qualification by the end of this teaching year.

Its funny when i go in to collage being in my early 30's with a bunch of 16-17 year old kids.
but its all a means to an end.

so just an update for every one who commented

and thank you for your advice
