There have been a few complaints around about Next credit cards. A few months ago I was asked in store to have a free catalogue - just put your email and address on the form the woman said. I started filling it in then looked on the back to see that you were actually signing up to open a Next account and to be credit checked. Very naughty.

You have to wonder what the point is of giving someone a limit of 250 quid and immediately reducing it to 100 - other than to sucker people in to having an account.

Stay well away from store cards is my advice, the interest rates are horrendous.
I know this sounds dumb, but if you dont spend on it why is it bad they open a credit account. Soerry its a sily question

You need to be careful how you write things as this implies I did not use the account within limits.

    . . . .

No it doesn't. There is an 'if ' there and an 'and' .

You kept within your limit, but you should also have paid the balance in full for the first few months at least. This is why your credit limit was lowered, because you were seen as an increased risk. And as the poster was saying, if you had done those two things it would have looked better on your credit record.

OP I agree with you that Next were out of order, although as another poster says they can change your credit limit at any time, doing so which puts you over the account limit cannot be right as it would render you overdrawn and liable for charges (the usual £12 I presume?) through no fault of your own!
I think you've done the right thing paying it off and closing it.
Some one said you are cutting your nose off to spite your face but I would respectfully disagree, and submit that instead it is Next who are shooting themselves in the foot by losing money that you would have potentially spent with them.

have you had a satisfactory response yet? I would also check to see if there is a default showing on your credit file.

Firstly I object to be tricked into opening an account when I had been told they were just giving out free catalogues in exchange for email addresses. Secondly, every time you open or try to open any store card, credit card etc. a credit check is made. Whether the account is opened or not, that search is recorded on your credit reference (whether it is approved or not).

It doesn't look good on your credit reference to have loads of credit searches being made.

To be fair to Next, the woman who tried to con me didn't look like a real Next employee. Too old for a start. I am guessing she was a temp who had been drafted in to flog the accounts and was probably on commission.

She had wandered off by the time I realised she was lying, so I just took the sheet and binned it. In retrospect I should have filled in a ficticious name and address and left her to do some paperwork.

I have only briefly had a store card - that was to get a 10% discount on some very expensive leather luggage and some other stuff I was buying. I had had my eye on the holdall for about 2 years but really couldn't justify another piece of luggage. Finally came down to 70% off in the sale, special day reduction was 10%, opening a store card got another 10% - result £27 for a large designer leather holdall.

Paid the card off straight away. Still inundated with junk mail several years later.

Store cards are such a huge con. There is no justification for the interest rate they charge when the BOE rate is so low.

I understand being tricked into an account, thats just wrong. I couldnt understand why it was so bad for a check. I understand now, thanks. I know the store cards are bad, the aprs are huge. I think martin recommended if you have to use one, get a group of people together and you can all use the discount, and take turns, but cancel after youve paid it off.
Thanks for clearing things up by the way.
