tracey04 wrote:i want to do this challenge for february, how does it work,. Do you decide an amount for food bills only. Do you just use cash as I get cash back on my credit card (pay off in full at end of month). Just want afew tips on how to save the pennies. Thanks
I also use my credit card as I earn M&S vouchers, then transfer the money at the end of every month. My boyfriend uses the switch card for the account though as he doesn't have a credit card (am trying to persuade him to get one linked to mine - points mean prizes!). I tried to avoid cash for food as much as possible as we pay for food from our joint account, which I don't withdraw cash from. I thought about starting to in order to pay for food, but I don't fancy carrying round a separate purse and we both do shopping as it's needed.
Really, I should have cut a long story short and said we both use cards to save hassle :rotfl:

Well I am very happy have just done my final shop for this month and I am way under my £200 that I thought we would spend. Meal planning has helped loads and just looking at the prices of things. For example I was buying Morrisons fresh chicken breasts 4 for £5 and then freezing them. I now buy their already frozen ones which are 6 for £3.98.:j0

Never added it up before as I always buy whatever is on special offer, so as from today I am going to keep all shopping receipts, I work at various supermarkets in one form or another and also do my dads shopping, so I go to a supermarket most days!!!!
Will be interesting to see how much I spend, I`m sure I currently spend about £320.00 a month, having said that I have recently bought bargain wine with money off so I won`t need anymore for a couple of months at least and I do have about 8-10 meals in freezer.

Hi there,
Been a member of MSE for some time now and never realised there was a Grocery Challenge. There seem to be a lot of MSE members invloved in this challenge.
I have kept most of my receipts so i shall start properly this week. I know i usde to spend around £40 a week, trying to cut this down to £30 a week for the time being but see how it goes.

Well I am annoyed with myself, I spent more today, probably because I knew I had some money left and thought why not! Ok they were bargains I got but I am so annoyed with myself at spending as I didn't really 'need' these things!
Must set a tighter budget next month! One day I might be more organised...........

you are still under your budget and doing well, and if they are bargains well..............................you can always put them towards February's challenge! Unless they were xmas cards and presents of course that may be more difficult.
I am going to try and reduce by £50 next month so will see!

Just so say I just missed my January target of £135 by a quid but hey it was still less than the £140+ I spend so I'm happy and I have added a weekly bottle of vino in under essentials!!!

Bottle of vino is def an essential! I am around £10 over this month but not bad given that we have bulk bought things which will go towards next months food.MFW #185
