In all honesty, I've never seen the point in having stereo speakers on a laptop. (but I can see the need for a stereo headphone output).
To get any benefit from stereo, you must either have the speakers a reasonable distance apart or be using head/earphones, and having a pair of stereo speakers 8" to 12" from each other is pretty pointless.0 -

Sound quality must have been a basic requirement as the OP was expecting a stereo experience rather than a mono one - therefore the material fact of only having one speaker was only identified after the failure to produce stereo sound was identified
