Debit card upper limit?

When I paid a deposit for my car with my debit card, the payment failed and I had to call my bank who then authorised it no problems. They said it was because the amount wasn't consistant with my normal spending habits. This was a while ago so not sure if banks still do this. On the other hand, OH paid 4 and a half grand recently using his debit card (same bank as me) and it went through no problems!Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

Paid £18k on my Halifax Debit card, for the balance of a car, last year. No problems other than the 'merchant acquirer' who acts for the car provider will ask security questions phrased by your Bank. And they won't be the standard questions - but will likely include recent transactions etc. Did warn Halifax in advance - but they didn't really want to know.
And have similarly paid NS&I £60k in a single transaction - without any security questions.
In essence the limit is your cleared Balance + any agreed overdraft. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Yeah I paid almost £4K for a car on switch from my first direct account a few years ago. They didn't ask any security questions, it just went straight through.Indecision is the key to flexibility

Shouldn't be a problem if you have let them know that you are doing a transaction of that amount in advance. Failing that - consider getting a banker's draft.0
