How much past the sell by date do you go?

I am always wary of fresh produce as I try and freeze the bargains right away(but not cheese). Don't worry about freezer advice - have eaten 6 month old frozen chicken and it is fine. Maybe flavour diminishes. We had 6 month old Sage and Onion stuff (greatly reduced) on Christmas Day and no side effects. I think common sense.

Don't do this with gooseberry and ginger yoghurt if your name is Catherine Tate:DRaksha wrote:But common sense is remarkably uncommon........
Just eaten some pate marked 22/12......... Ops!
We all eat yougurts past their sell by date, just as long as the top isn't 'blown' and they will keep refridgerated for weeks........ Never experienced any ill effects yet...
Otherwise use common sense - if it is all blue and furry, I would chuck, unless you are makin penicillin - prolly OS MS saving on prescriptions:DAn average day in my life:hello: :mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T

I was just thinking about this ......
I bought some steak mince from Sainsburys on Wednesday 2 for £4. Used one pack , but the other opack is in the fridge with a use by date of 28/12/06.The meat looks slightly browny , pack is unopened , do you think it would survive until tomorrow so I can do a chilli ? (Ate at Mums today , so no more food today )0 -
I also use my eyes and nose - remember, best before and even use by dates are normally there to protect the shops, not us. if they have put a 'use by' date on something, and you use it after and become ill, you cannot go back and complain, as with best before, if you eat something after that date, and its not so good, you cant go back. I find things are normally fine, as the shops will be over cautious to protect themselves.
Saying that, if it looks or smells dodgy, its straight in the bin!!!!!0 -

I think beef is meant to be brown, rather than pink/red - it just means its more mature. Just make sure it smells ok, and once cooked, tastes ok!!!!0 -
Depends what it is, meats can go by colour and smell usually, cheese same, milk and eggs I rarely risk, milks usually gone ewwy by then anyway. Tend to freeze anything before it's use by date anyway. One day I might be more organised...........

I've always believed that cheese doesn't go off, it just matures. That said, when I got married and SWMBO threw out my antique food collection there were tins and packets over 10 years old...:o0

I would brown it with some chopped onion tonight and then refrigerate it to make chilli tomorrow.0
