I do the same - if it smells and looks okay I'm happy to use it.
Dry things go longer too (e.g. flour, rice etc)
Save the earth, it's the only planet with chocolate! :)
  • Hi All,

I've still got three Easter Eggs, that went out of date in July 2006. I had one of these two weeks back (at which time I had four!), perfectly okay!

    Cheers

I generally ignore the use by dates on cheese, fruit and vegetables. Definitely a great believer in having a good sniff before using - if it smells and looks OK then I'll use it.

A bit more cautious about meat - particularly poultry - but again if it smells OK then I'll give it a go.

I use my nose. If it smells doubtful, particularly meat, out it goes.

Same as me. I take no notice of sell by dates whatsoever and rely on my nose. :)

hi, when i did my hygene course the instructor told us that if an item says "use by" it has to be discarded after this date because of the build up of bacteria.but if the label says "sell by" or "best before" it means that the item is at its freshest before this date.it is still edable after this date but wont be as fresh and will start to go stale.hope this is of help.
  • Today I discovered some Asda smart price butter dated bb 11 Dec 2006. What do you think? It looks ok but I haven't tasted it yet.

It'll be fine, especially if you've kept it in the fridge. Use your nose and if you want, try a little bit. If it tastes rancid, then you can get rid of it. Butter keeps for a lot longer than the use by date IMO

I tend to use common sense - if it looks ok and smells ok then we eat it. I don't eat things like yoghurt if the top is blown but other than that we eat most things past their sell by date if they pass the sight/smell test.

My Dad insists on keeping everything past the sell by date but is not that careful to check things. Hence on Christmas day he served us:

Homemade bread from an out of date packet. The yeast was useless so the loaf was the size and consistency of a house brick:rolleyes:

Ketchup that was 2.5 years out of date and had changed to the colour of BBQ sauce.

Both items were thrown and not eaten!!
