Proof of unemployment?

Hiya! I'm applying for a job and have been asked to bring to the interview proof that i'm unemployed, I presume the position is government funded or part of a scheme only open to unemployed people. I am unemployed, but i'm not claiming any job seekers benefits so have no proof that I can think of. Any ideas? The manager of the company suggested contacting the job centre to see if they can print out proof or write a letter, and i'll be doing that on monday, but wondered if anyone has been in a similiar situation, and what proof did you give?

Thanks!

Whether you are claiming unemployment benefit or not you should still be 'signing on' each week to get your NI credit'
Not doing this can have far reaching effects for ESA, or any benefits in the future you may need to claim as well as
having an impact on your state pension

Give the DWP a ring or pop into the job centre and ask.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Can't see them doing that if you've had no contact with them and aren't signing on. They wont have anything they can print for you.

Lol id like to see you try to get some kind of proof from the job cnetre you have been out of work when you havent had any contact with the job centre.
  • i think it would be unfair of a future employer to ask this if you're not claiming - a P45 should be more than enough. Why not ring the company and tell them as you can't be the first person for whom this problem has come up?

I'm afraid you are not "unemployed". You are, presumably, "non- employed". Those two are not the same thing. "Unemployed" means that you are registered as unemployed and "non-employed" means simply you are not employed (so could be a student or housewife for instance or just not working for whatever reason).

    What's the definition of unemployed?

    I don't have a clue

    All I have is a P45 from 2009.

Signing on does not prove you are unemployed you can still claim JSA even if you work.

A p45 is enough. If not a signed p46 is a binding tax related document. They can use that like every other employer. The question is why aint you signing on. I guess you have savings but even them you should still go through the process.

Thanks for all the replies, I feared as much and thought that getting proof out of the job centre may be easier said than done. Weird that I could be classed as non-employed rather than unemployed then, just because i'm not signed on to job seekers, didn't realise that.

Tried asking the company and they've said letter from job centre or benefits letter is all they can accept, new placement so they've never had this problem before. Tried offering my P45 but they said it's not enough proof.

Thanks McKneff, you're right, I probably should sign on again to get my NI contributions. I'll look into that!

Hi dmliverpool, sorry only just saw your reply. I was signed on and claiming contribution based job seekers allowance, found a temporary job, then didn't sign back on when that ended as my contribution based allowance was very nearly up and I didn't qualify for income based as my partner works. I have enough savings to live off until I find a new job hopefully. Though yes I realise I probably should have signed back on to get my NI paid!

I was on contributions too which ended and I kept signing on so the JC could carry on taking care of them for me. I would go back and sign on just for this - pain in the bottom, I know, but it's better they're taken care of than to have gaps when you reach state pension age.

I'd also go back and challenge the employer on this - just because they've never had it before does not excuse their inflexibility. It's not your fault your out of work and your partner does work! It's a ridiculous reason for someone to not give you a job so go back and try the person's manager.
