I think perhaps I have misinterpreted some of the "LET HER SORT IT OUT HERSELF" comments in this thread and it is now clear we are infact all singing from the same page.

I agree that purdita's role should be supportive and conducive to her daughter getting her own life on track. Not financial.
There is a hell of a lot she can do in this respect and it should not be dismissed suggesting just to wiat until her daughter has her own lightbulb moment.

Intercepting letters offering loans and further credit seems reasonable in helping her realise that she has an unsustainable amount of debt, rather than allowing her to believe that she can take on more debt easily and without consequence.
Allowing your daughter, or anyone you know, to run up further debts in the hope that they will have a LBM sooner rather than later is irresponsible regardless of your intent.

Thanks for the advice. As I said in my initial post, I do not intend to help her financially, but will do all I can to try to curb her spending, and if this means intercepting offers of "easy" credit I will continue to do so (and she is aware of this!!)
I have tried contacting the Christians agianst Poverty as suggested, but unfortunately they can't help as we are not near a branch.
We are going to contact Citizens Advice to see if she can speak to a debt specialist there. I think that an outsider explaining her options will be a calmer approach and hopefully she'll follow their advice.
She is relieved I think that I am forcing the issue here and I feel more optomistic that just maybe she might get a grip and take responsibility for her spending......Here's hoping anyway!
My husband says he will leave me if I don't stop shopping......... God I will miss that man.
