Or makes a living out of repairing them?

Probably one area of the economy that continues to do well.

I love my Zanussi. Had it for 12 years without a single callout. (of course, now I've said that I've probably tempted fate and it will break down today!)

I changed my Hotpoint tumble dryer which lasted 15 months before an expensive fault for a Zanussi and so far so good.

"I only got that one because it was the only one that would fit!"

Esqui - is that the whole story? I should have thought your job would put you in a good position to know whose machines give you the most or least trouble.

Bekos are made in Turkey, which to my mind is preferable to China, where the very cheapest ones come from. As a friend of mine pointed out, even the expensive German ones are still put together by immigrant Turks!

BTW, may I put in a word for this site? It's run by a chap who used to service these things and whom I've always found very helpful...

It is, actually. Where we used to live was tiny, and I needed a machine that wasn't very deep, otherwise I would have had trouble getting into the kitchen! At the time, Beko were the only ones we sold that had shallower machines (Hoover have some now, too). Besides, they weren't all bad, and 5 year full cover for about £80 after staff discount was quite good.

So if it goes in that time, I'll get a new one. If it lasts 5 years, then for £250 in total, I'll be very happy!

(Also, slightly very off-topic, but we got some new Logik-branded fridges in a couple of weeks back, with "Made in Turkey" written across the box. Hmm...wonder who makes those for us then? :p)

  • Thanks, Esqui. Brand names are a thorny issue, aren't they? Even trusty old Hoover are now owned by Candy, famous for their exploding machines..

Argos now do a brand called 'ProAction' which sounds like pure marketing hype - I think the same models were badged 'Bush' last week!
