direct.gov gateway

I registered for a government gateway user ID a while ago now. I have a record of my user ID, but (obviously) no record of my password.

To reset my password, I need to provide them with:

my memorable date
my memorable place
my memorable name

who on earth thought this through? If I can't remember my password, how likely is it that I can remember all of those other three things?!:mad:

I am now unable to use the government gateway for anything!

So you wouldn't remember the date you were born or married etc?

As said, the keyword being memorable so you don't need to remember as you just know.

Grimbal, you're not the only one - I ended up registering a second time because I couldn't remember the "memorable" details. The second time, I kept the letter they post out and wrote my password on that while I could still remember it :D

and say you have none of those things?! My major issue with the website is that there's no "help I'm a nit wit & forgotten everything" button or telephone # for the likewise recall-challenged. It just stops. No further help at all !

I've said it once and I'll say it again, write these passwords and usernames down.

    Three levels:
    1) Stuff like this forum that nobody can use for identity theft - notebook by computer

    2) Stuff that is rarely used but can be used for ID theft such as government gateway - I've got a sheet of paper in my filing system that a burglar will be hard pushed to find .

    3) Bank accounts etc. I memorise.

Alternatively, if you have more than just one or two to remember, consider using one of the free Open Source password managers such as Keepass, which has many years of development (and examination by impartial people for potential flaws) behind it.

Just remember to set it up with both a good password/passphrase and a keyfile (which it will generate for you), put the keyfile somewhere other than the password database (preferably on a memory stick), and backup both somewhere safe (I keep the keyfile and database on separate memory sticks, each at a different relative's house).

took my cousin who has learning difficulties to a govt office to get some forms for tax credits. He had to give them "memorable dates etc". And they would not let me hear what was said, even tho it was clear that he would never remember. They were really unhelpful, said because I didnt have POA they wouldnt let me listen /help at interview, which I had arranged with them because we needed the help!

Do everything online with him now, all written down.
