trying to cut supermarket spending

Are there set days/times when supermarkets drop their prices?
Just by chance recently I came across a couple of fish and meat bargains because they were on their sell by date. For example a pack of 2 large free range chicken breasts for around £2.50. I stuck em in the freezer and used as and when.
The other thing is - if you are prone to temptation - it can save money to shop in a more local shop with higher prices but less range.0 -

Seems be changeover day on Tuesday/Weds at most places every few weeks.Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.0 -
The way to cut right down is to cook from scratch. Get on the Old school board and see some of them taking it all the way and spending something like £5 on a weekly shop
.
The downside is most of us dont have time to make everything from scratch every day. So the Simple answer is to shop around.
If you had unlimited time you could go around every supermarket, pound shop, discounter and market going snapping up all the genuine deals, but chances are you don't. So keep a shopping list of what you really need and compare online on a week to week basis while not ignoring the likes of Aldi/Lidl.Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. I love Lidl, they've got such wonderful offers every weekend! There's a thread about these offers here, I read it regularly and get some wonderful bargains. Aldi/Netto are also good, but they are not around here where I live. Try getting discount vouchers and coupons, there's a board about them on the site.If you feel my post has been useful, " merci" would not go amiss.

Where do you think they get the money from that they so generously give to you on these wondrous "points" schemes ?
A. from the Lottery
B. from the 3.30 at Epsom
C. by adding a bit to your bill
Why do you think Lidl, Aldi, Netto etc DON'T operate these phoney cash back schemes and are much cheaper than elsewhere ???0 -
You can get quite a few money off coupons from supersavvvyme website. first register with them, then log in and go to this page http://www.supersavvyme.co.uk/triedandtested/landing-page.aspx next to some things you will see the words "£ coupon" click on the coupon word and you will have a choice of things to print, not allof them are on the original page.I printed coupons for Ariel £2, Head n Shoulders £1, Bold £1, Fairy £1.If you feel my post has been useful, " merci" would not go amiss.

Netto don't operate anything at all given that they gave up on the UK grocery trade a year or so ago and were bought by ASDA. The only objective survey I've seen comparing the prices charged by the Big Five to the 'discounters' showed Lidl and Aldi to be way more expensive. Aldi in particular fared very badly, as in you were paying 50% more than you would in Tesco or Sainsbury's, but then Aldi isn't really a discount store, people just think it is.0 -
With all of the supermarkets, one product will be cheapest at one, another at another. If you went to each of them to get the cheapest items you would probably overspend on the attractive items they have placed on the way in.
Aldi have some fantastic fruit and veg offers and have the most reasonably priced (when compared to quality) ground coffee, pesto sauce, brie and butter.
I find what works best for me is to go to the most convenient store to where I am working that day, with a set budget and a rough and flexible meal plan. I might know that I have salmon in the freezer and need some veg to go with it, that I'd like pork chops the next night but if I saw some beef reduced this could be swopped, etc.
For a really low budget, my friend uses Tesco online fortnightly which works very well, but does mean less variety.0 -
