Hey. Got a Pug 206..and I THINK the brake discs are a bit screwed as threw the wheel i can seelines on the disk and when i brake itmakes an awful grinding noise!
Anyway last year it cost about £250 for new pads and discs from nationwide auto centre...
This time I want to look around first.I'm in Carlisle for a week and then stafford but I guess this is urgent. Does anyone know any places in Carlisle that would be cheap or could at least give me a proper quote without being conned!!!
Thanks for any advice..I'm a student so its really appreciated!!

I agree with Albatross.
Unless your some sort of heavy footed freak, the likelyhood of you needing new pads within a year, are remote.
Take both the wheels off,and have a look for yourself. If the pads are fairly thick, then you are ok,and don't need to worry. If you are at all uncertain, then get a friend who even has a small amount of car knowledge,to have a look for you.
Remember. Most garages will fit them, and rip you off,if you go in and tell them that you think you need them.

Im not heavy at all on the brakes though have had a none fault crash which involved heavy heavy braking.. though that was literlaly months ago and this started a week agoish?
I had a look using a torch through the wheel and could see the metal brake disk with circular lines.. many of them, different radius so for example
(o) where theres an outer circle and inner circle.. but there was literally hundreds.. i dno if this was the metal grinding from the brake onto the disk as I am aware this happens when brake pads are worn down!
I'm no good with cars at all so not comfortable with taking tyres off and looking and thats by biggest problem. (Am only 19 and crap with cars)...
Thanks for the help so far though.. if I cant find any more info maybe kwikfit will be best option for advice?[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

I'm in your situation, needing new discs and pads, and im going to try fitting them this weekend! I recommend buying a Haynes manual and the pads and discs, then do it yourself - a lot cheaper!!
i'll let you know how it goes0 -
I've always done it myself, discs and pads are pretty simple.
Pads can wear down in a year. It depends on how hard you like to brake and how soft the compound is.
I'd suggest taking the wheel off and inspecting before buying new discs. They have a tolerance on thickness before they need replacing and often a large lip can build on the edges.
If you need new then call round a motor factors.Happy chappy0 -
Dead easy and well worth the time, and effort. For Discs and pads look up your nearest GSF store (https://www.gsfcarparts.com) as they tend to be at least 30% cheaper than a stealership

He is an old Volvo master mechanic, who does my Volvo.
He is cheap, reliable and won't rip you off or do unnessesary work.
He will get the parts you need from TMS a motor factors or Original if you wish.
I had a bottom ball joint replaced, supplied my own parts, £20.
Two track rod ends replaced, again supplied my own parts, £20.
Discs and pads shouldn't take more than an hour so my guess for labour charge is, yep £20.
If you need directions PM me.I have a cunning plan!

nooo posted a little too late i'm afraid

Got it done through quick fit.. cost £150 for new brake pads and discs with a lifetime guarentee which was quite useful I suppose.. the guy was nice enough and last year nationwide auto center charged me £100 extra for the same work!!!
Car is a pug 206 and I'll definitely be looking into all these links and stuff for the future. This fix was urgent as driving to Stafford before new year and need a fully working car first!
Thanks all for the help.
Does anyone know any simple motoring/engineering courses around? May want to do one over the summer to stop being ripped off basically!!![FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Most colleges do a short term basic mechanics course.
My sister-in-law did one a few years ago.
