Hi

I've had broadband for years. Over time I've done all the tricks of dropping the ring wire, wiring from master socket direct to microfilter and then have the rest of the house phone wiring after that, all those sorts of things to get best performance. I had DSL-504 router and the best I ever got was 5-5.5Mbs. IP profile of 6500. I'm talking 5+ years here.

Recently I noticed my IP profile dropping of a bit, 6000, then 5500. So I though perhaps the router was getting a bit old, components aged. So I bought a new router (TP_Link TD-8840T) and what a pleasant surprise!. The new router connected at 7616 kbps, faster that my old one (6976) with nothing else changed. I then got my ISP to turn off interleaving as that automatically limits ADSL1 to 7616 kpbs. I now connect at 8128 so get the maximum 8MBps. IP profile is at max of 7150 kpbs. Best download speed test now is 7.11 Mbps. Best £15 I spent in a long time.

Different chipsets will give different speed for a certain noise level. The reason the Netgear DG834 earlier versions were popular was because they gave a good speed on a noisy line.

I must admit that TP-Link seem to be turning out to be quite a dark horse in the budget networking market. I've been impressed by the ears their PCI wifi cards have.

yeah, I've been hearing some good things about them, but unfortunately they don't appear to be tweakable via telnet/DMT/routerstats :(

    Yet.......

As they become more popular, I'm sure someone will work it out.

Router-stats lite works with this router but that just screen scrapes the normal web interface. Still it does plot snr for you. OrbMT also works, that plots the bit/tone allocation.

I have the telnet manual for the TD 8840T. I asked TP-Link and they emailed it to me. Note the T in 8840T stands from Trendchip. That's why DMT etc. don't work I think as it's not the usual chipset. The telnet commands don't include any tweak commands such as changing the snr but you can get useful line data. Some useful commands are

wan adsl chandata - display the adsl channel data or line rate to determine if you're on fast channel or interleave channel mode.

wan adsl linedata f, wan adsl linedata n - upstream or downstream line noise margin and attenuation, and tone matrix

wan adsl perfdata - adsl performance data (e.g. FEC errors etc.)

wan adsl diag - loads of diag data, part way down is SNR figure with average/min/max

The commands can be shorten to 1 or 2 letters, e.g. w ad c. You need ad for adsl since there are 2 a... commands for wan.
