Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

Which is cheapest? :-)
Personally I'd opt for the 3 seperates rather than one combined solution. No particular reason, just my choice.
I've got AOL antivirus (free Kaspersky one) with Adaware.0 -
If you're limiting yourself to those choices alone, the all-in-one solution might be the better option. Ad-Aware and SpyBot aren't exactly the sharpest tools in the shed, or so the author of this site claims:A couple of years ago most folks relied on SpyBot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware for spyware protection. Alas spyware has evolved so quickly that these once outstanding products are no longer up to the task of providing primary protection though they remain useful as secondary, on-demand scanners.0

the author of the article recommends 2 commercial products - one seems to have a referrer code, so the site gets money, I may be incorrect (?acode=af1&rc=1132. ) Spysweeper used to be free and one of the few tools available.
As he states the free version of the Spybot and Adware are on demand scanners but Spybot does provide tea-time protection and "Immunization" which stops the browser from visiting know "problem" sites. You can pay for Adware and get a real-time scanner. But if you want a free:money: real-time mal/spyware scanner read on
The Article finishes off by recommending 2 "newer" tools Windows defender Add defender to ur list Get Defender it is free and by MS  From article "On the downside Spyware Terminator is slow to scan and can slow down your PC a tad though not as much as Windows Defender. I've also heard reports that support via the free forum is poor. "
Defender, Spybot, AVG Anti-Spyware and Adware are updated weekly/daily and can be supported and simple to use Read the stickies at the top of the forum for more info ... HTH
PS Robothell - hope you have a firewall ...
PPS I have never used Spyware Terminator - so will not commentRich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.0 -
I use...
Zone Alarm - firewall
AVG - anti virus
Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware SE, and A2.
All free with regular updates.
And *touch wood* I have never in 3 years of using these products had a problem.
Sorry I can't advise on the othefs as I have never used them.0 -
best free pc security software in my opinion
avg or avast anti virus
comodo firewall (performs better than zone alarm pro and its free for life)
spybot search and destroy
adaware
i use windows defender too because its based off of one of my favourite programs
never heard of spyware terminator but i'll check it out0 -
Thanks for the opinions guys.......
Have a bit more time today so I can explain my rationale.....
Been using PC-cillin for years now (got OEM free with various drives etc) and had no problems. Will cost me £25 to buy of Amazon. Used several free jobbies in the past and ended up slowing my PCs to ridiculous extremes, although granted that was a few years ago and software and processors have moved on a bit. I haven't really restricted myself to the above bits of software, just those were the ones that seemed most recommended.
So my dilemma is: do I spend the £25 and get an all-in-one package that I am fairly confident in or do I go for the freeware, hope it doesn't slow me down and spend the £25 on booze, blackjack and loose women?!?
And to calm the concerns - I use a router and use Black Ice as my firewall.Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave.

Use this and forget everything else. It'll be the only thing you'll ever need and it is free.
https://www.sandboxie.comDo I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -

Safest option, cant go wrong!... better than any AV/AS soluton!, (but safe to have AV/AS just incase!)
I personaly dont think Ad-Aware and SpybotS&D are the best free anti-spyware/adware solutions...
For free AntiSpyware/Adware, I allways recomend:
AVG Antispyware (Ewido)
SuperAntiSpyware
Windows Defender0 -
Let me get this straight - you don't need a firewall, antivirus software of spyware if you download sandboxie - is this for real? It won't remove anything already on your PC though, will it?0

It doesnt remove existing spyware, virus and adware though, Sandboxie's like a PC inside your PC, so if you open a virus/adware/spyware within your sandbox, the sandbox will be infected, but your actual PC will still be clean... to remove the virus/adware/spyware from the sandbox, you just need to click a few buttons and everything in the sandbox is removed (all files, infections, registry entries etc). Wont recomend it to newbie PC users though, newbies may have difficulties with it, often they empty the sandbox and they forget the sandbox had information they needed0
