Just had Laser teeth Whitening & in pain!

Options
Hi everyone..

On Thursday I went and had laser teeth whitening (Pearlys)..

I have really good teeth but all the tea drinking had left its mark, so decided this would be a great idea.

Was told I may experience some sensitivity and not to eat food with colour in for 48 hours after the procedure.

Well, I think the lady that did it may have been a trainee as she was being supervised, the gum protector paste was put on and hardened and she went ahead and applied the peroxide prior to the laser.

During the second laser treatment (they do three) my lower gum was being extremely painful and I had to get them to stop.. They took everything out of my mouth and my gum had blanched and turned bright white where the peroxide had seeped through the gum shield.

It has slowly been getting more painful as the days go on, my gum is shredding and keeps bleeding on touch and it is extremely painful.

I did not have the 3rd laser as it hurt to much.

Has anyone experienced this with there gums before???

Pearlys I assume is not a dentists? If so they have carried out illegal work on you. Go to see a dentist because your gums sound as if they have recieved chemical burns, hopefully the damage isn't permanent but early treatment may stop things getting worse. Get someone to take photos of the gums now. Look on the GDC website http://www.gdc-uk.org/Membersofpublic/Illegalpractice/Pages/Tooth-whitening.aspx which will tell you how to launch a complaint.

Pearlys have bee <illegally> whitening the teeth of X-Factor contestants for many years (But they don't say illegally on their website!)

I'm sure that now the General Dental Councl have had success with prosecuting non-dentists doing whitening, Pearlys will be high on their hit list.

Get evidence of the harm caused, and as Brook says, report it to the GDC.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Forgot to say of course your gums shouldn't have been burnt. That is not normal and needs looking at. Teeth whitening is potentially permanently and irreversibly damaging to teeth and gums which is why it shouldn't be done by beauticians with no experience of oral health and disease other than a couple of hours "training". Phone up your dentist, explain what has happened and get an appointment.

Oh no that sounds horrible; I feel for you :( I had my teeth whitened quite a few years ago; I have sensitive teeth but didn't have a problem with the procedure, although it was done by a dentist who was extremely careful as he knew about my sensitive teeth. I was expecting zingers (I think that's what they're called; when you get nasty shots of pain from the sensitivity) but thankfully it all went fine. So sorry you're having such a rough time, hope your dentist does something to ease the pain and as soon as you're feeling better, go after the horrors who did this to you.
Never argue with an idiot; they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

just echoing the sentiments of brook and toothsmith. As a follow on from the other thread though. I have said this before. As usual the salons do the damage but its the dentists picking up the pieces unfortunately. Please tell all that if they want whitening see the professionals i.e. dentists

Last week, the General Dental Council announced that they are indeed investigating Pearlys for illegal practice of dentistry.

If anyone has suffered as a result of this firm, then please contact illegalpractice@gdc-uk.org.

    Thank you.
