usb hard drive crashes PC

A friend of mine brought his iomega ext usb drive round - plugged it in and after 20 mins my pc crashed "strange, never crashed doing nothing before" i said - "can't be my drive, works fine with me" he says. Turns out today, after accessing the drive for the first time, it causes a memory leak ie - explorer.exe grows and grows stupidly in memory usage in task manager until it slows the whole system down to a hault.

No viruses/spyware/crap on his or my machine.
Anyone out there got any suggestions?

Is your PC fully up-to date with all fixes after XP Service Pack 2?

If yes, then it would be worth looking at the Iomega website to see if they have any new drivers for the device, or any recognition/fix for the problem.
