Can I fabric paint a shower curtain?

My bathroom needs painting & I'm going for a bit of a novelty theme (penguins 
). One of the things I need to replace is the shower curtain but I can't find any suitable ones that I like - at least, not at a reasonable price.
I wondered if I could buy a cheap white or pale blue shower curtain & use fabric paint to paint it with snowflakes or something similar. That *might* be within my artistic talents, but only just!
Presumably if I buy the right curtain & the right paint it could still be put through the washing machine every now and then?
Suggestions or recommendations?
