Broadband internet speed

For the previous couple of weeks I have had problems accessing the internet during the evening. This has been worst since Christmas. Could it be the post-Christmas period when there is excessive usage during the evenings? I am on wireless broadband with Orange. Wireless network connection still shows speed 54Mbps, signal strength excellent but I have not been able to connect at all for the last two evenings. Daytime is fine which makes me think it could be general usage in the evening and not my PC or BT line. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Have you tried connecting to the router using a cable? i.e. is it just a wireless problem? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Is it that browsing is just slow or you can't get on at all?
If your running slow, could be for a number of reasons:- Is you exchange contended? Go to http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/ and type your phone number in, if your VP Capicity is red your contended and will therefore suffer from slow speeds.
- Check http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=freeserve This is a forum for other users on Orange and you may find someone with a similar problem/answer.
- Is your wireless connection locked down? If not, there maybe someone else logging on to your wireless connection
- Try a speed test and post the results, http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html is a pretty good starting point

Thanks everyone. I have just done the usertools exchange test and this is what it gave...
Virtual paths: Red
BT is reporting that some of the virtual paths at this exchange are not operating within BT Wholesale's planning guidance, although they are still operating within the product specification.
At busy times, your ADSL connection may operate at a reduced speed, although not all customers on your exchange may be affected. You should only contact support if there is no current ETA date set.0 -
Thanks Albertros,
Just done the speed test as you suggested on https://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk
The result was 474 kbps0 -

Hmmmmm, what type of connection are you on? I'm on ADSLMax (upto 8mb) and running the same test I've got 6201kbps.0
