Fake vinyl

Hello, I purchased a fake (or modern re-press) of a rare vinyl LP . I know it's fake because of the matrix code (This wouldn't have been known until the item was actually recieved and looked at closely).

However, I have never had to return an item so unsure of the whole process. I requested a return stating my reasons and stupidly left positive feedback about an hour before I realised it was fake due to it being in good condition (Well it would be seeing as it's only a few years old instead of 20 odd) and arriving very promptly, im not too sure if I am able to change the feedback too?

Anyway, I'm quite new to this and have never felt the need to return an item so any advice welcome.

As it's fake, the seller has acted presumably acted fraudulently. I would ask for a full refund, including payment for return postage if the seller wants the goods back. I'd say that I'd return the record once the refund has been received. If the seller has a problem with that, you could threaten to sue them for damages (probably not actually worth the effort!) as well as reporting the fraud to eBay and the police, and you could even ask HMRC to confirm that they are registered for tax (if they need to be).

In other words, firmly but politely state what you want to happen, and if the seller refuses gradually increase the pressure until they realise that you aren't going to take "no" for an answer. Hopefully they'll realise that it will be a lot easier to just give you what you want.

The problem with screaming fake is that you said it yourself it could be a modern re-press and that isn't a fake, it's just a modern re-press, which the legitimate record industry seems to do a lot of these days.

Also did you ask the seller what the matrix code was BEFORE you bought it? Presumably this code (never heard of it before) is on the actual record and can be seen by anyone who knows where to look. Did you email them to ask them what it was and explain if necessary how to find it?

Hi Pembroke, I have had it confirmed to be a fake. Modern reissue in this context does not mean an official reissue but a modern copy of a much older (and rarer) record. Matrix codes are basically the numbers and letter engraved near the hole on the wax (very basic description) many sellers do not provide this usually only the catalogue code. I should have asked for the matrix code, as to many sellers are knowingly or unknowingly selling fakes.

Anyway, the seller has accepted my return and I will have to pay for the p&p.

Wow. I wouldn't want to be left out of pocket by a fraudster - if anything I'd want compensation for my wasted time!

Anyway, glad to hear that you've got most of your money back.
