got a lod of walls to paint and dont really have the time to do severla coats of watered down paint (used 4 paint/1 water and worked well)
I cant remember the ratio for mixing PVA with water so it only needs the one coat before painting over... anyone?

glenbat are you trying to wind everyone up lol
DO NOT USE PVA AS A BASE COAT
Painting new plaster
Do not be tempted to seal the surface with diluted PVA as this can seal in moisture and lead to problems in the future.0 -
Glenbat, You have spent a small fortune on getting your walls plastered, so surely you can take the time to do the job properly, please please do not PVA the walls prior to painting:eek: its a myth.
Spend the time, and do your miscoat, (watered down emulsion), 2nd coat, still water down, dont add so much water, 3rd and 4th coat you can apply straight from the tin,but personally speaking as a decorator, if its good quality paint, dulux for example, I would still slightly water down the last coat also, the finish will be worth it.
Please do not use silk  on your new plastered walls, use if possible trade matt, failing that Vinyl matt, if walls have just been skimmed.
Lord knows what the repercussions will be if you use PVA or silk, a small percent of people are lucky, but the majority will have such problems, please find the time and do it right.0 -
Use a watered down coat of emulsion.0

thanks people
didnt realise how wrong i was! I asked a year or so ago and was told either watered down paint 4:1 or watered down PVA but I guess its paint/water then
Thanks everyone0 -
You probably watched the same TV program that I watched that told people to paint the walls with diluted PVA.
At that time I did not know any better and so I fell for it as well.
It was only when I looked on the net that I found out that it is not the correct thing to do.
Good luck with the painting!0 -
When our house was replastered I used something from Wickes called "paint for new plaster". It covered brilliantly in two coats, but allowed the walls to continue to dry out through the paint.
I suppose it was just an old-fashioned emulsion - not vinyl or any other non-breathable ones. It wasn't very dear and came in enormous tins, the only drawback was the choice of two colours - white or magnolia!0 -

What is the problem with using silk paint? When we had our walls skimmed, we did the 1st coat with watered down emulsion then used coloured silk emulsion.0
