Aaargh. help with set-top box and DVD recorder needed please

my DH has been tearing what little hair he has laft out. we bought a JVC DVD recorder with a hard drive a couple of months ago, which is great but we have a Sony Bravia TV and we could not get the freeview channels onto the DVD's guide system. After several phone calls back and forth to JVC we discovered that this was not possible. So DH bought a cheap and cheerful set-top box as the DVD recorder has the ability to get freeview onto its guide system like that.
Except...horror of horrors, the Tevion set-top box is not recognised, i.e. the JVC does not have the right code to set it up, probably as it was a chesp and cheerful Aldi one. Does anyone know how to sort this out so that we can actually see more than channels 1-5 on our DVD guide system without DH having to fork out for another set top box?

do a search for Tevion. It's probably just the cheap end of another manufacturer. If you can find out who owns then you can try their codes and see what happens.
