Our children always loved the Forbidden corner although it may be a bit tame for twelve year old.

I've heard good things about the Forbidden Corner.

Alnwick is massively overpriced, the much-publicised gardens are a big let-down, the food service is terrible and should you be unfortunate enough to go on a wet day, or want to linger walking around the inside, you will discover that you are there on sufferance. The only thing it has going for it over many, much cheaper and friendlier English Heritage castles is the Harry Potter connection. They exploit that to the maximum, with themed tours and magic shows-and my children really enjoyed it.

Beamish is nice for a two year old; I still remember my son toddling up to and having a conversation with a turkey as big as he was :)

Lightwater valley has a lot of rides aimed at little ones, as well as bigger rides. I think its a great day out for all the family.

I have heard good things about Forbidden Corner but its seems expensive and friends of ours told us its not really somewhere for a full day.

I agree Beamish is fantastic, everyone will love that.

Would also recommend Newby Hall and Gardens, Brimham Rocks if the weather is nice, Fountains Abbey or what about a day in York? There is a great Park and Ride for York and loads of attractions.

I'd agree, but it is a very full day out (when we last went, we were waiting to go in when the doors opened in the morning and got chucked out in the evening, and still hadn't seen everything!).

So it may not be the best choice for the OP if they are simply looking for a few hours break on a journey (I'm not quite clear as to if this is the intention or not ?)

My daughters 8 & 9 loved camelot been a few times lots of vouchers around for it.

Lightwater Valley again great day out (and lots of vouchers)

One of our favourites would be South Lakes Wild Animal Park (again you can get kids go free type vouchers for this as well)

    Alnwick castle is great

    not been to forbidden corner.

other suggestions Blackpool Zoo or a combo of something like Lakeside& Haverthwaite Railway, Lakes Aquarium and Lake Cruise again good offers on the combo type deal.

Flamingoland is another great day out.

    Regards
