housing benefit, family of 5 are we entitled to a 3 bedroom please?

Options
hi

we are self employed on low income and getting help via housing benefit and tax credits but our house is getting very small which is a 2 bed house in what now is a very bad area for us and our kids :(

Would we be entitled to by housing benefit to go for a 3 bed house via probably private rented

2 sons aged 4 and 10 and our lil girl whos 6 they all share 1 room via bunk beds and a single, they have big room and we have small lol :) it was the only way to give them some space.

any advice would be fantastic

regards
dave

Its because you have 3 children, whether its 3 girls or 3 boys or 2 girls and 1 boy. You are entitled to a 3 bed rate. its if you have 1 boy and 1 girl that many people become stuck.

I think they require 2 to share but 3 is classed as over crowding.

Not strictly true, it's due to the gender of the children and the age of the children.

Of course its about whether you have 3 children,as well as the ages. Clients with 3 boys will be given a 3bed.LHA rules do not expext 3 children to all share 1 bedroom. Clients with 2 boys aged 2 & 3 for example will get a 2 bed. A client with a son aged 8 and a daughter aged 6 will also only be a 2 bed as both under 10 years age LHA rules state they can share a bedroom. If you have a daughter aged 16 and a daughter aged 7 you will qualify for a 3 bed rate as the rules state seperate bedrooms same sex up to the age 15 or over.

OP, LHA calculator link is working.play around with it. You are entitled to a 3 bed so dont worry.

Are you thinking of giving up a property in the public sector to rent privately?
