You are responsible for your usage from the day as a new owner or tenant you informed them you had moved in and provided them with a meter reading, your details and a meter reading should have been given to them the day you moved in.
If you are only telling them now they may require proof that you moved in when you are claiming and request a meter reading, you are not responsible for the previous peoples debts however they needed to know you had taken over occupancy, until they have these details how are they to know you have moved in.0 -
Hi RealDeal - The longer you leave this the worse it's going to get, and because you did not notify SG the day you moved in and give them meter readings you will now have to give them "Proof" of the date you took over the property.
Read the meter and phone SG a.s.a.p, and make photo copies of whatever documents you have that show the date you took over the property - Lease Agreement/Deeds ? - and send them to SG.
Whilst it's not clear, the 2nd paragraph in your original post seems to imply that SG have written to your address offering to renew a "Business Contract".
If the previous occupier of your home was indeed running a business and on a business tariff, whilst you as the new occupier are purely domestic GET ONTO SG IMMEDIATELY TO TELL THEM THIS0 -
What if I do not wish to be with Scottish Gas ?
I can call them up and explain that I am new to that household but why should I give them meter readings and sign up to them if I can get a better deal ?
Can I just go straight to an Energy supplier of my choice or do I still need to call Scottish Gas and explain I am not liable for their bill as I am a new resident ?[/QUOTE]
Crikey, I'm still reeling from the fact that you didn't read your meter and give the details to Scottish Gas as soon as you moved in. If you haven't done so already then make sure you also read your elec and water meters asap. That way you only pay for your consumption and not that of the previous tenant/owner.
You don't have to stay with Scottish Gas and it is so easy to switch supplier once you've decided which one you want to go with. Obviously you do have to pay SG for any gas you've consumed (which won't be much at this time of year?) up to the date you switch supplier.
As others have said, you need to contact SG without delay and give them correct information otherwise life might get complicated. Good luck!
