What is the Best way to use United Miles?

Hi All
My wife and I have around 50,000 united miles between us.
I know they are a star alliance member.
I am struggling to find the best use of these miles? any suggestions
I have looked at using the miles for trip to NY but with the taxes and fees it charges more then buying a ticket with Virgin.
I am very flexible in destination... I just want to know what would be best value for money using these.
