HP Photosmart problems

I wonder if anyone can help. I have a HP Photosmart C4580 and although I have installed original cartridges the printer now tells me that it can't detect them. I have tried taking them out and putting them back in but no luck. They have been working fine for a couple of months so I can't understand why it has suddenly just started saying this.

Clean the copper-colored electrical contacts quickly so that the print cartridges are not outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. If a print cartridge is outside of the printer for too long, the ink can dry and clog the nozzles.

I have a slightly different model of virtually the same printer and I've started experiencing the same problem in the last few months. I don't use this particular printer often so I suspect that is probably the cause. My way of solving this is pretty much what santer said, wipe the contacts with a slightly damp cloth, give the cartridges a shake and pop them back in.0

Thank you both for the replies. I will give your suggestion a go and see if that works. If not might have to resort to buying a new printer.0
