Incoming call has blocked my phone

This afternoon I received a call, but on picking up the phone I heard a bleeping noise so put the receiver down. My phone base was still flashing as if I was on a call, so I picked the phone up and found I had no dialing tone and the read-out said "busy". My phone has now effectively been disabled by what I believe to be a nuisance call. The number was 09822380095 - - -(don't know the full number as screen not long enough), which I believe is a New York number.

Have tried unplugging the phone from the main socket for half an hour, as suggested on another forum, but no joy. 3 hours and still no phone. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

What makes you think it's a New York number? Surely they would start 001?

Could it not be an Iranian number (the international country code for Iran is 98)?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I would like to contact TalkTalk, my phone and broadband providers, to see if there is anything they can do to unblock my phone from this incoming caller. As I'm unable to ring them, I've tried to contact TalkTalk through "contact us" on their website. Unfortunately, the page is not loading properly and I can't type in any of the details in the boxes provided. I believe that TalkTalk monitor MSE, so would be grateful for any advice TalkTalk customer services can give me.

Hi Heinz. I agree, I always thought New York was 001 212, but when I googled the 09822 number there were suggestions that it was a New York number. Don't really care where they are from - I just want them to HANG UP.

Plug your phone back in (if it has a recall button) or use an ordinary wired phone if it doesn't.

    Pick up the line.

Press R (Recall) or briefly bounce the hookswitch.

    You should get dial tone.

    Hang up.

The phone will ring back. Let it ring out. (Turn off answering machine if necessary). It will time out within about a minute and this should clear the line.

If that doesn't work you'll need to contact TalkTalk if they supply your service under LLU (local loop unbundling). If it's CPS (carrier preselection) then BT still operate the line and the BT operator on 100 may be able to clear the line. (You'd need to phone from another phone.)
