moving home.. moving my BT line to a home that has Talk Talk at the moment

Having a really baad time with BT..

I called BT a couple of weeks ago as I am moving to a house around the corner.

The house I am moving to has a talk talk line.. When I booked my move for the line, the line was checked and was told everything is fine and the number will be switched over on the 1st of August, as it is active and there will be no charge..

All appeared fine until last week, i got a text message to say my order had been cancelled and to contact customer services..

Well I called to only to be told that the person living at the address has not consented to the line takeover and that BT openreach have canceled it as Talk Talk are not allowing permission. I was told that all I had to was ensure that a stop was placed by the current owner with Talk Talk giving permission that the line can be taken over by BT and the line changeover will still take place on the 1st of August.

Well everything was confirmed with the current owner , in fact she had cancelled with talk talk last wekk monday..

So i called BT again today only to be told that I will be charged £130 for the move.. I dont understand as this was never detailed before, there is an active line and there is no need for an engineer to visit as all connections are fine.. needless to say I am PEEVED about this and am now thinking I may be better off with sky..

Has any body else taken over a talk talk line when they moved and been charged??

any advice is appreciated.

The £130 you have been quoted is the cost of provisioning a new line or reconnecting. The TT line is LLU'd, so you need to ask BT for a 'return to donor'-this is free, but requires a 12m line rental contract, not just a change of address. However, if the line is stopped by the existing occupier, then it is disconnected and BT will ask you for a reconnection charge-also £130.
The issue here may be that of transferring your old number over, if that is what you intended.
You will have the same issue going to Sky, as LLU to LLU direct transfer are not offered by many ISP's.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • The charge is for a "new line". That doesn't mean, by the way, a new copper link all the way to the exchange, but the provision of a service where none currently exists. Whether an engineer visits is irrelevant. There is *not* an active line at the property, there is a cancelled service and a master socket. The actual work required involves moving a pair of wires from one piece of kit to another at the exchange. Openreach charge the provider about £60 for that and the provider - in this case BT as well, another division - make a £70 markup on that.

What puzzles me is why you weren't quoted the £130 the first time and I wonder if it might have just found its way onto your first bill.

    Believe Sky charge a smaller figure - more like £30 - £50.

    Plusnet is £49
    Virgin National £39
    IDNET £85
    AAISP £150

    and so on

This is a new provision, so the prior status of the line (a Talk Talk LLU line) would not seem to have any relevance.

The days of free connection are long gone. However were you to remain with BT perhaps they'll discount the £130 in return for e.g. an 18 month commitment and you taking their broadband as well.

    Sky sounds more attractive.

Thanks.. Macman.. very knowledgable of you.. what is LLU?? and yes the line has not been stopped by the existing occupier, and she has asked for her line rental to be cancelled with talk talk only last week. so not really a reconnection is it??

    thanks very much appreciated..

  • Thanks Mark.. I am confused also.. as I was told there would be no charge to move the line as it is still with the same exchange and it is a so called 'simple' switchover..plus I agreed to another 12 month contract for a free move of the line.. me thinks too many people saying different thing at BT?!!

thanks for the extra price info too.

Local Loop Unbundled; i.e. the line at the exchange is connected to TT's network, not BT's. Openreach maintain only the local loop to your home.
It's not a switchover once the existing line is cancelled/stopped-that is a disconnection, which results in a reconnection charge. There are plenty of ways of avoiding the full £130 charge, either by using providers other than BT, or using one of BT's regular offers.

  • thanks for the info will check in later as I have meeting to go to :(
  • I thought that I would let you know of the positive result I have had from BT..

I contacted the BT care team and was told that I was incorrectly informed of the charge and that there should not have been one..

Everything is to go ahead as before and they apologised for the error..

    great stuff BT..:T

and thank you all for your kind help and guidance too..

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
