If it were me I'd be inclined to fix my shelves to the wall and forfeit my deposit. I'd rather know my shelves were secure and safe.0

well it wouldn't involve any drilling or holes in walls
We're also not allowed to stick things up with tape. (Blu tack is allowed.)Herman - MP for all!0 -

I'd rather tie my children and the dog to the chairs first, before I willingly forfeited my deposit.Herman - MP for all!0 -

I laughed out loud to that.
I am about to become a landlord myself and in the past few years I have been a tenant twice, once in a new build flat.
I was horrified at the strict rules, I couldn't even put a mirror up in the bathroom. No pets and all that.
I intend to be sensible with my tenants. For instance I love greyhounds and my friend laughed when I said I would allow dogs as long as they are greys from rescue, I would even supply them if requested (joke).
This is a home not just an investment. Is there a rule that says we can't be nice too? I know the doomsayers will say I will be taken advantage of but I really wouldn't go into it just for profit at any cost.

We will be doing the same, once our son moves out of the family home.
I think sometimes landlords are so caught up in all the intricacies of letting that maybe they forget to be reasonable too. I'd like to think I would be a reasonable landlord.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Oh god angelsmomma, can I rent from you? Our current landlord won't even let us put two smoke alarms up ...0

I would have thought he should be supplying them himself. This is the kind of thing that really gets me. He is putting your lives at risk by refusing.
This is on my list to do before letting.Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.0 -
Makes you think how lucky some people are renting social housing often not paying full market rate, often large houses if they built many years ago with large gardens and a lot less strict0

If you phone your local fire brigade they will come and do a fire safety check and can contact the landlord saying there needs to be fire alarms. The fireys will even provide and fit them for you.
Where I live, landlords should be registered and you can't get on the landlords register that the council hold unless there are smoke alarms.
At the very least it will shame your landlord into having smoke alarms. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
My OH has just let his house. He despises visible cables so he has pipes and conduit and ducting all over the place behind the walls. He wanted to go down the "no way no how never" route with things in the walls to make sure the tenants don't hit anything they shouldn't. So as a compromise, I've got him to fix a mirror in each bathroom and put picture hooks on the walls in all the rooms so that the tenants don't actually have to face bare walls every day. I'm hoping that by making their lives a little bit easier, they won't feel the need to ignore his overly strict diktats!0
