Credit Rating while travelling

Hi, I'm new here so sorry if this has already been covered or is in the wrong place.
I'm looking to spend 6-12 months on a working holiday in Canada starting Winter 2012, and I've heard stories that your credit rating get destroyed if you're out of the country for a long period. As an example, my step-brother spent 3 years working in Dubai and now he can't get a mortgage or buy a car on finance.
My question is, is it true that your credit rating drops while abroad and if so, what are the rules and how long do you have to be gone?
Cheers,
Dave
