Fly Drive Question

Dear all,
I am hoping for a bit of advice regarding a holiday I am hoping to book next year. I'm currently studying for my PhD, and am going out to California to complete my fieldwork for three weeks next year. I'm first going to Washington to do some research, then heading out to California. My boyfriend is joining me after the research and we are going to go travelling on the West Coast for 2 weeks.
I'm obviously doing some research and looking at hotels etc. However, I'm having a bit of problem with flights. The fly drive prices are working out far cheaper for the both of us than for me to get a one way flight back to England (as obviously my bf won't be joining me on the flight out) Is it possible to pay for the fly drive, and not be present on the outbound flight?
I know it seems daft as I'll be paying for a flight I won't be going on, but it is looking like the cheaper option.
Does anyone have any advice on this? The price of one way flights is extortionate!

Unfortunately, no it's not. If you don't turn up for the outward flight they will automatically cancel the return.0
