Campsites in Brittany

Hi everyone,

In the school hols I am planning to take my grandchildren and daughter from Jersey(Channel Islands) to a camp park based not far from St Malo in Brittany.

Have been told Des Ormes near Dol des Bretagne is good. Has anyone tried it or could you recommend any others in that area.

Has anyone advice on which companies are the best to book with and whether best to pay in sterling or euros.

At 70 I am a bit rusty re campsites but know that children love them so a big thank you in anticipation for any help.

We went to Chateau des Ormes a few years ago it's a fantastic site but it has become quite large, and may be busier than when we went. The facilities were great really clean and well kept and the restaurant food was great quality. We also stayed at a site about three miles from the port at St Malo called CAMPING DE LA VILLE HUCHET it was owned by the same team as Chateau des Ormes and had the same attention to detail but was on a smaller scale. They have their own website but I can't post links sorry.

When our kids were younger we stayed at campsites in Bittany severl times, though we tended to stay in mobile homes. We found it significantly cheaper to book direclty with French sites than to stay in British run caravans on the same site. We stayed with Yelloh Villages several times. See the English version of their site:

    http://www.yellohvillage.co.uk/?__utma=1.414490861.1310639087.1310639087.1310639087.1&__utmb=1.1.10.1310639087&__utmc=1&__utmx=-&__utmz=1.1310639087.1.1.utmcsr%3Dsearch%7Cutmccn%3D(organic)%7Cutmcmd%3Dorganic%7Cutmctr%3DYelloh%2520villages&__utmv=-&__utmk=217752598

Their sites varied from the large and bustling to the calm and quiet. It depends what you and the kids are looking for. Le Ranolien, was a big, bustling, well-equipped site which had the advantage of being by the beach and on a network of coastal paths. We also stayed at Guilvinec which was much quieter.. and somewhere near Quimper whose name escapes me. We never had any complaints. One small issue is that French caravans(and tents?) may be equipped slightly differently: eg: small coffee cups rather than than tea mugs and steak knives which we weren't too happy letting the kids loose with! A trip to the local super/hypermarche soon solved that first time and we came prepared thereafter!

Obviously there are British operators to check as well such as Canvas, Eurocamp and Keycamp but we found them more expensive.
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

Yes I agree with the above - we stayed there a few years ago, it's very big, loads of stuff to do on site, noisy evening entertainment (open-air), not good if you like early nights but if the kids like campsites they'll love it. A good feature was pre-paid wristbands which they can use for paying for stuff eg a drink after swimming so they don't need to carry cash around.

From Jersey you'll probably be better booking direct with them, or google who does bookings and search for the best deal. Paying in Euros will almost certainly be cheaper.
