I'm miffed now reading this - I returned an item to Next without the receipt and only got the sale price amount against the item I exchanged it for. It was clearly not marked with any red dot and I know it was originally bought at full price. I wish stores would be consistent with their policies.
Still, at least I got my own back by using the 3 digit code before Xmas and saved loads!!!0
