Get Video from DVD Camcorder to PC

Hey Everyone,

Father-in-Law bought us DVD Camcorder Hitachi DZ-BX37E for christmas. I'm trying to work out how to get the video from the camera to the PC.

I've tried straight from the DVD but it only has two folders on it DVDCAM and VIDEO_TS. None of which have any obvious file types in there.

I've tried using Movie Maker to import movie but it doesn't recognise any of the files. Also tried accessing the camera using the USB port but windows explorer and movie makers keep bringing up and error box saying incorrect function.

The Camera did not come with any software and in the manual it says that this particular model does not have a software bundle included. (entry level)

Any ideas??

  • According to Hitachi's site (I'm struggling to find your exact camera), http://www.hitachidigitalmedia.com/DMG/dvdcam2_faq_pc.jsp there is an optional editing kit. Hitachi say the software they recommend for editing is "Ulead DVD Movie Factory"
Its available from most places Dabs (sold out), Insight, or Amazon and under £30.

However - I would take a look on https://www.videohelp.com - you might find there is software for free.
http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=224833 sounds complicated - but it is exactly answering your question, I think

What file types are in the Video_TS folder.... Is it .VOB.. If so then these are already in DVD format and will have to be ripped to the hard drive using a program

we are having the same problem with a jvc , the files are on the computer but wont write to the dvd burner for some reason, the blub states dvd-rw our dvd writer is dvd+ wonder if this makes a differance or not? Fun these high tech toys! , ours nearly went out the window ......../
my bark is worse than my bite!!!!!!!!
  • Two folders...

    DVDCAM containing..
    DVDCAM.IFO

    VIDEO_TS containing..
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.VOB

The above DVD has been finalised. When I play it in media player it doesn't play with sound.

I also have a DVD with clips on that I have not yet finalised. When I put the DVD in the computer it doesn't appear to have any files on it.

You will need to finalize it before it will play on a pc or a dvd player. Once you have done this, use DVD Shrink to copy the contents to a DVD image file, then you can burn that to a normal DVDR using Nero etc. There are other methods, but that way you should have no problems.

Not sure what the issue with the finalized one can be but have you tried that in a dvd player rather than on your pc? If it plays ok on a DVD player then the issue is probably related to WMP/codec.
  • Cheers guys. Downloaded a trial version of Movie Factory and cracked the nut!
