Littlewoods Virgin Mobile - Advice needed please!

Firstly apologies for the long post / rant!
At the end of March I bought a mobile phone from Littlewoods. Within about 6 weeks it had started to develop problems, and by the end of May it did not recognise top ups and so was impossible to use.
After several frustrating hours on the phone to Virgin Mobile (the call centre and the UK based technical team), they concluded that there was an inherent fault with the handset and I received a refund for the phone credit that was unusable.
I contacted Littlewoods and was told to return the phone and I would receive a refund. I did this, and at the beginning of June I got a letter from them telling me they had sent the phone away for "inspection" and I would be contacted soon. I have since heard nothing.
I have called Littlewoods several times and just been passed around from one clueless department to another. They claim it is nothing to do with them and I need to speak to the inspection centre. The inspection centre will not talk to me because I don't have a reference number.
I called Littlewoods again on Monday and was told that there was no-one available in the department I needed to speak to, but that someone would call me back. Surprise, surprise, still nothing.
I bought this item in good faith from Littlewoods and not only did it stop working within weeks of purchase, I now don't even have the phone because I sent it back as instructed. I have not been given the refund I was told I would get, I've had to buy a new phone in the meantime, and I've spent a small fortune being passed around various call centres.
Can anyone please advise on how to proceed?
